Mitch Mitchell died today (Well, yesterday at this point). Much respect, Mitch. I don’t want to belabor the point, except to note that he died on tour. We should all be so lucky.Less widely reported, Buddy Miles died back in February. So both of Hendrix’s drummers were born the same year (1947) and died the same year. Weird, huh?

ANYWAY, this post is not entirely about drummers that played with Hendrix. In fact it’s mainly about the show that the Jonx are playing this Saturday, November 15. It’s the Woozyhelmet CD release party! Yaaay!

Woozyhelmet is a band composed of Jay Crossley, Toto Miranda (who also plays in the Octopus Project) and Brandi DiPietro (who also plays in a Houston expatriate band called the Sour Notes, as well as some other bands in Austin), all of whom are old friends of the Jonx. They’re nominally an Austin band, but Jay and Toto are from Houston and they go way back with Stu and our old bass player Shawn Durrani. I think they used to be in the Invisible Robot Fish together?

Get Down is the second full-length Woozyhelmet CD. That is a much more remarkable achievement than it sounds like, considering the first Woozyhelmet album came out back when I was in college, making more than seven years between albums. These guys make the Guilloteens look like Ryan Adams. BONUS: Prior to their first CD release show in Austin last weekend, they hadn’t occupied the same room in four months. Great show.

Woozyhelmet have a genius for heartfelt, comical, quirky, yet still totally rocking pop music that few bands, and none in Texas, can match. Many bands can melt your face, but it takes a special one to melt your heart. Woozyhelmet are one of those.

The Wild Moccasins are also playing this show. They’re an accomplished and acclaimed young local band of whom I have not heard as much as I should and am rather unqualified to sing the praises. They were the Houston Press’s “Band of the Week” a couple of weeks ago, though, so you can read about them there. Here’s a review from the Skyline Network, in case your tastes run to the bloggier.

The show is at ArtStorm, an alternative gallery space in the Third Midtown Museum Ward District Area of downtownish Houston, aka “4828 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004.” See their website down at the bottom for more information about the space, as well as information on how you can volunteer for the campaign to re-elect the Jonx to the crucial municipal office of conscounciltrollerman officer of the Fifth Punk Precinct of the Scene.
